Lightship Basket Museum
Built in 1821 at 49 Union Street this structure's rehabilitation had been a source of debate within the community due to its location at a prominent intersection on the Island . The building sat vacant for several years until its acquisition by the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum.
Chip Webster & Associates re-designed the building to house the Museum's exhibits of the historic lightship baskets, known worldwide for their unique character and craftsmanship, as well as to provides space for lectures and demonstrations.
The project included a complete structural evaluation and remodel, and required additions on the back of the dwelling to allow for local code required means of egress and handicap access. The front façade was preserved to retain the original home's historic aesthetic.
