MSPCA
The new facility for the Massachusetts ' Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA), on Nantucket Island , replaced the out-dated building of the 1960's. A firm specializing in veterinary facilities planned the interior spaces and Chip Webster & Associates designed the exterior structure.
Barrel vaulted porch entrances were set into forward facing gables to emphasize the various doorways to the facility. The main entrance was accented further, by flanking paired columns and a projected gable. A dramatic, open lobby welcomes guests, with exposed timber trusses spanning overhead. The building is shingled in white cedar, with darker red cedar specified for the flared "skirt" which wraps the lower three feet of the exterior. Roof trim was also carefully detailed to wrap roof eaves and gable ends without interruption.
This project required extensive coordination between the architectural firm and other project team members, including the island's Historic District Commission (HDC). With the experience Chip Webster & Associates has, working with the HDC, the process of obtaining approvals was smooth.
