Vermont Chalet
This Swiss-inspired chalet lies at the base of Stratton Mountain in Vermont and is carefully sited to allow the owners to ski in and out. The floor plan revolves around the massive stone chimney with the kitchen and breakfast areas facing east to capture the day's first light. The main living areas wrap westward, taking advantage of the late day sun, and open out to a deck that is just a snowball's throw from the ski trails.
A variety of materials and the simple massing recalls the classic structures of the alpine and creates a sense of European history. The building's base is crafted of indigenous stone with stucco and the upper frame is clad in natural cedar. Heavy brackets also add to the building's rich detail.
