Red Barn
Commonly referred to as the Red Barn, this dwelling was part of the original Vanderbilt estate on Nantucket . Today it serves as one of the primary public spaces for entertaining on the 35-acre gentleman's farm, which is comprised of several out buildings and cottages.
The simple massing and vernacular have been retained during the restoration process, as well as much of the interior wood. The beams and flooring were refinished and retain the barn's true character. Though the scale is large and the details are executed in a manner that maintains an intimate environment. The great room, with its open-hearth fireplace and limestone benches, is one of the Red Barn's primary features.
The dining room, kitchen and lower level wine cellar were added to the original structure in 1998. Of complimenting timber build, the addition was designed to accommodate over 50 people. The ‘vintage style' wine cellar storage room features imported antique timbers, limestone walls and a floor of recycled brick.

The
kitchen is also an addition to the original structure. Constructed
in a fashion to stay in keeping with the original structure's
character. The 500 square foot space is designed to prepare
meals for crowds of over a hundred however it was important
to maintain a very residential character. This was accomplished
through the use of woods, stone, and brick. The fine attention
to detail maintains the scale of the space, from stone-carved
keystones in the brick, to the fireplace equipped for grilling.
The wine cellar, also added in 1998, appropriately occupies
the lower level of the barn. Antique timbers were imported and
refitted to create the wine storage room. The floor is of recycled
brick. Beneath the fire room is the wine tasting room. The limestone
walls evoke a character of a hundred years earlier.
The Red Barn displays the successful rehabilitation of an old
structure to meet the needs of a gentleman's farm.
